Artist Statement

I am processing my thoughts and memories through the use of sacred geometric patterns with illustrative details. My process is deeply meditative, embracing the calming rhythm of drafting patterns using a straight edge and compass. The transparency of oil paint allows me to build depth, capturing the passage of time. My practice follows in the traditions of the early 20th century Theosophical Painters and contemporary Visionary Artists Allyson and Alex Grey, using esoteric symbols to explore a theme. Overlapping circles are a simple yet very specific motif and have been used in decorative art since ancient times. By combining 7 overlapping circles, I create the 6-pointed pattern called the “seed of life” or the “star of creation” symbolizing growth. When I change the pattern to 13 circles, it forms a 12-pointed radiating pattern echoing the months of the year or the face of a clock. The full moon celebrates the Mother Goddess and an experience that is at once unique and universal. My branching lines and “mammary flowers” are informed by physiology, presenting the mothering body as a reflection of divine Nature. In composing images layered with rich colors and meaning I am remembering that life is cyclical, persistent, and ever hopeful.
